Letter of the Week Packet for G

Goats, and grapes and gardens and gumball machines...what a lot of lovely things there are to do with the letter G.  We focused on the hard sound of G for this group of projects, as you can see, and happily, the season worked out for us too, since we were planning our garden in early spring, at the same time as we began working with this letter.

I'm going to share about many of the activities we did, most of which are available in our Letter of the Week packet for G, right here:  https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Letter-of-the-Week-G-1998411

Our little mnemonic for helping the kids remember the G sound, has to do with our Glimmercat character guzzling grape juice with this sound: guh-guh-guh!

She's cute, isn't she?  The whole idea of Grapes as a word to connect with Letter G was wonderful.  Because every kiddo loves grapes.  And they were a perfect fit for our Letter G color sheet which echoes the image above, though in black and white:

In fact, we have all kinds of activities for grapes...look at our lesson plan for the Grape Day:

You can see we have two activities with grapes: one is a puzzle and the other is a little craft.  But first, we started talking a bit about grapes.

We talked about how they grow on grape vines and how they can be trained to grow in what almost looks like a little tree or bush.  And showing pictures of the grape clusters (like this above) helps too.

Then, we glued on our "grapes" (we used purple beads but small purple pom poms would also work great!) to our grape vines.  And then, for a follow up we snacked on grapes!  (Who wouldn't love that!)

What about G is for Goat?

This is a simple "Cut out the shapes and glue to a paper bag" kind of Puppet craft, and would go really well with reading the "Three Billy Goats Gruff".

Now this next one is not included in our packet, but since we were beginning our garden at about the same time as we were covering G, it just seemed great to squeeze it in. We made our Garden labels with small shells we glued on, and the kids helped me color the veggies.

And now for those Gumball Machines!

We have this sheet, above, included in our packet.  It comes colored red or as a black and white copy.

But I also want to show you how to do these, just in case you're able to:

We made these fun little home-made gumball machines using two plastic champagne glasses (one upended on the other) with the stems cut off, plastic shot glass cups and regular sized small red paper cups.

The first thing you need to do is use a lit match to melt off the plastic stems of both of the champagne glasses (beware the toxins!).  Once this is done, the little red cup can be trimmed to fit on top of one, and the two glasses's rims can be glued together (tacky glue works awesome!).

We put in the candy first though.  Ironically, I had no gumballs: just JellyBellys.  I don't think the kids minded too much.

Gumballs are a welcome addition, of course!  For our GumBall Activity, pom poms would work, but we just used crayons.

I have to admit though:  Our physical gumball machine craft was an even bigger hit.  Something to do with the candy included...

Here's the Mini Book for Letter G, all completed:

I created this as an independent activity, for the end of the week.  The four activities echo what has already been taught, and hopefully, children can do most of it on their own.

Letter of the Week Packet for F

Frankly, we had fun with the letter F.  It's astonishing when you sit down and think about it, how many delightful nouns begin with F.  It was almost a trick to narrow down which ones we'd choose to do.

For instance, "F is for Fox".

One of the activities included in each of our Letter of the Week packets, is this nifty "Match the Big Letter to the Little Letter" Coloring activity.  It's good practice for those capital and lowercase letters.  My daughter got to use paint for this one.

Then she used our Fox craft page (available in color or black and white for children to color on their own) to make this little guy.

On another day, we introduce "F is for Flower", as seen in one of the Lesson Plans included in our packet:

After completing her Flower Puzzle, she made her little pom pom flowers using the craft sheet:

For the Homeschooling Mom, here's another idea you could include in your F is for Flower day:

We began with the green letter F that makes up the leaves and stems of the flowers below.

Then we cut and folded some toilet paper tubes and had the fun of painting them, too.

We were going for Black-Eyed-Susans and opted for a black puffy center, but you could certainly use a different colored pom-pom for the center if you wished.

Another fun craft is included in our F is for Frog Day.

We decided to have it be a black and white printable that could be printed out and colored.

Yep, F is for Fun, first and foremost!

I have a pre-colored and black and white option so that the kids can color it if preferred.

Our Reading Literacy lesson is all about the book "Fox in Socks", and so foxes were rather important to this week's letter.  If you can, watch the portion of "Milo and Otis" where Otis hangs out with the fox.  My kids are always giggling at that point in the movie, and I think it showcases foxes really well.

Letter of the Week Packet for E

E is for Elephant!  Right?  That's usually the first thing to come to mind, and we definitely have a full day where we showcase elephants in our Letter Packet.  In fact, the lesson plan for E looks like, this:

You could make an elephant from egg cartons, like in this picture below.  Although really cute, they were a challenge.  And I knew a craft this complicated won't work well for a classroom...

So, I created this fun and easy elephant in our curriculum packet, that should work great for having a little elephant "on hand".  Haha.  Well, once they cut it out and stick one finger through for the trunk, that is.

But my favorite craft in this packet is the Eggshell Craft.   Here's why:  Children love getting tactile.  And they got to smash their eggshells before gluing them onto their little egg.  Which, any kid will tell you, is awesome.

I like to include extra ideas here, so don't forget how fun the old blown out eggshell can be to decorate:

Ahhh, They're so cute!

Using yellow paint and our trusty Q-tips, our kids painted their eggs completely and then let them dry.  I had these little feathers on hand, and the kids glued one feather to the top hole (covering up one blow-hole), and we glued their foamy feet to the bottom, (covering up the other blowhole).

So when you're done, no holes show, and you have this cute little egg chick:

Super cute, but more for the homeschooling mommy then a teacher with a roomful of kids to manage.

Whatever the Eggshell craft you decide to do, we have a fun puzzle to follow it up with.  And of course, this little chicken is setting on...Eggs!

Here's another little craft I made, in an attempt to come up with something clever for "Envelope".

The cutting was tricky, so small children will need help.  And tape is the sticky element of choice for this one.

In spite of the extra challenges, this was such a hit with the kiddos.  It's the whole pretend play thing.  They just loved pretending to mail their letters to each other.  They loved dropping their envelopes into the mailboxes.

A few other notes about some of the activities in our letter E packet, which is available on our TeachersPay Teachers store:

The schtick for the letter E had to do with an Elf that our Glimmercat character meets.  The Elf is wearing Earmuffs so he can't hear our little cat friend.  So, he puts his hand behind his ear and says, "Eh?"

And, of course, the Letter E says "Eh", so we have a little fun with this and include a little Elf craft in our packet, as well.

And if you'd like to pick up the pages you see here, along with some writing practice sheets, a Letter E matching game, flashcards and many other fun activities and reading literacy pages, you can find it at our TeachersPayTeachers store here:  https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Letter-of-the-Week-E-1981207

Letter of the Week Packet for D

Here we are at the Letter D Letter of the Week Packet plus additional craft ideas!

Our packet which includes everything shown in this preview here, has now been released to our store here:https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Letter-of-the-Week-D-1976138

The letter D had so many fun things to Do!

We start out the week with a lot of things to do revolving around "dogs".   Here's one of the lesson plans for this day.  This shows the printable dog craft (available in both color and black and white) and a Dot to Dot page...

One of my favorite crafts for letter D, looks like this in our packet (there's also a black and white version):

The extra materials needed for this one are a Styrofoam ball and Q-tips:

The final product turned out so fun, we framed it!

Dinosaurs are always a favorite with kiddos, and here is one of our contributions for that amazing creature:

A little cutting, a little puzzle discovery and a little pasting, and a dinosaur shows up.  What fun!

Now, since in our "Story" for Letter D, Glimmercat discovers a drum.  And plays it with a "duh, duh, duh!"

So, we made little drums.  We made these using empty ice cream containers and large balloons.  We cut the balloons and stretched them across the open end of our ice cream containers (after the kids painted the containers to make their drums their own.

As you can see, we used pencils to drum on it.  It actually made a pretty legitimate drum sound and these kids loved drumming on their personal little drums!

We also have a letter D song that backs up our story.

A drum craft was definitely a priority for Letter D week.

The last craft I'm going to go over here, was our little Duck craft, printable seen here in the Lesson Plan above.

It's a little duck made from small paper loops, but the finished product turned out pretty cute:

And here is my son working on his little D book.  Each activity is tested and approved by my four year, almost five year old.

The one other item I want to go over here, is the Reading Literacy Activity because it was a very fun one.

In our house, "Go, Dog, Go", by PD Eastman is a big favorite.  My kids love the Seuss-like photos.  They love the story, which is easy to remember and they can repeat.

So, we decided to create our Reading Literacy Activity for the Letter D around this story.

Our activity has to do with the stoplight that figures in the story.  Stoplights are fascinating to toddlers, and with the help of a little red, yellow and green paint (and a Q-tip), the quickly painted in their own stoplight.

Here's an extra idea, not in our D packet:

A Dog Refrigerator magnet.  We used foam sheets cut into basic shapes (mostly ovals and circles) and a magnet strip.  It's pretty simple, and if you would rather, just use construction paper to put this little guy together.
